This semester, Weber is offering a Printmaking class, taught by Amber Singleton. Seniors Rem Hellmann and Hannah Jones-Morris have been working hard to learn how to create beautiful prints. The class is described in Weber’s course catalog as being “designed for students interested in developing skills in working with printmaking media.” Rem and Hannah have learned how to use a special type of printing ink, which requires a retarder to slow down the ink’s drying time. They consistently bray, or break up, the ink and retarder on a plexiglass plate before applying the mixture to what is being printed. When The RamPage visited the class, Rem and Hannah were working on a project with printed leaves. Follow their printmaking progress below!

Rem laid out leaves on his page so he could create his design. He then brayed black ink for his project. Braying involves mixing printing ink and ink retarder to a thin consistency that can be used on the leaves.

Rem puts a leaf on a piece of newsprint, paints the ink on the back of the leaf and then presses the leaf onto his project paper. He repeats these steps with every leaf he uses.

This is what Rem’s project looked like at the end of class on Tuesday, November 7. He hopes to continue inking red and yellow leaves to create a tree.

Hannah used the larger printing press to make a darker inking of her leaf. She created a positive and negative image of the same leaf.
