This year, Weber’s swim team practice officially started on September 7, 2017. Paul Murray, a team member, said “As a team, we have come closer together to be able to work better as a team.” Paul explained that “Weber does not really have any rivals since our team is small. But, we are a strong team.”

According to Coach Riley Clark, there are seven team members, including seniors Sophia Videlefsky and Eric Lieberman, who are co-captains, as well as Sydney Rein, Paul Murray, Reagan Freeman, Noam Friedman and Lilah Pressser. Clark said that “Being committed to the team, coming to practice and pushing to do better” are all tips for helping to improve. She said that “We swim against so many teams that it is hard to really have a rivalry.”

Swimming meets include several different types of events. For starters, there are four different types of strokes for the races: freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. There are a few different lengths of races as well. Freestyle races are 1,500 meters long. The longest freestyle events in high school is 500m. One challenging race happens to be called the individual medley. This involves swimming with all four strokes.

Swim meets are very similar to track and field meets in that they both involve different events in the same type of sport. Like there are running relays, there are swim relays. Two types of swim relays exist. These are known as the freestyle relay and the medley relay. Each swimmer on a team goes in a particular order.

So far, this year’s Weber swim team has had three meets at Lakeside High School, Washington Park Natatorium and Chatham County Aquatic Center. There will be eight more swim meets before the season ends. These meets will take place at the Mountain View Aquatic Center, The Lovett School, Riverwood International Charter School, The Westminster Schools, Pace Academy, and The Aquatic Center in West Gwinnett Park. The regular season ends with the 48th Annual METRO Atlanta Swimming and Diving Invitational will take place on January 19-20, 2017. Be sure to check Weber Shook for more updates in case these change.

The team is driven by each other as friends, teammates, and of course, schoolmates. Swimming’s state championship will occur on February 3, 2018 at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Be sure to attend that and cheer them on.
