University of Miami Student and Weber alum, Shannan Berzack, took a picture of Drake after he handed out $50,000 in scholarship money to a student during his filming of the music video “God’s Plan.” (Shannan Berzack/University of Miami)

Drake’s new music video for his song “God’s Plan” is not like most music videos. As explained in the first few seconds of the music video, Drake’s budget for his video was $996,631.90. Instead of creating another elaborate video similar to that for “Hotline Bling” (in which the jacket he was wearing was worth $1,150 alone), Drake decided to use this tremendous budget to make a difference in the world.

The lyrics of the song are about wishing for a better future. There are a lot of “bad things” in this world, however friends and family are around to support one another. These acts of kindness shown throughout the video take place all around Miami.

Throughout the video, Drake handed out thousands of dollars to various people and organizations. He donated $50,000 dollars to a University of Miami student for a scholarship. He also donated $10,000 to the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. Drake additionally gave money to the city of Miami Fire Department. Drake took out women from the Lotus House Shelter for a shopping spree, paid for everyone in a grocery store’s food, and gave new cars to a few families. Smaller acts of kindness are shown throughout the video as well, including stacks of $100 bills being handed out to different families in various parks throughout Miami.

Not only has this song increased random acts of kindness (more videos of people have been posted who have completed similar acts as Drake), “God’s Plan” has been number one on Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks. The genre of Drake’s new top song is a mix of hip-hop and rap, two of Drake’s most dominant styles.

While many people in Miami were directly affected by the donations from Drake, fans around the world were indirectly touched. Five different religious figures including rabbis, pastors and an islamic figure had something to say about the song and video. Eddie Stern, director of the Brooklyn Ganesh Temple, was unsure about whether it made Drake seem self absorbed by flaunting his excessive cash and acts of kindness. However, Stern also noted that this video is not self absorbed because it has motivated others to perform similar selfless deeds. Stern states, “one would hope that other people watching his video will be inspired to do the same.”

Similarly, Richard Lawson, Dean of Saint John’s Cathedral, explained that this video is very powerful, and even can serve as some sort of prayer. He likes that Drake doesn’t get too specific about God’s plan, as no one knows exactly what it is.

So many people were moved by Drake’s video, including Drake himself. Drake’s instagram username is “@champagnepapi” and he captioned that this video was “[t]he most important thing [he has] ever done in [his] career.”
