Starting next school year, The Weber School will open the brand new Daniel Zalik Academy, a state-of-the-art science, technology, engineering and design institute housed within a M.I.T. inspired Fab Lab. The Daniel Zalik Academy is modeled after the Mitchell and Guerin Academies at The Milken School in Los Angeles. The M.I.T. inspired Fab Lab, or Fabrication Laboratory, will be the center of all student science, technology, engineering and design projects and will be used cross-functionally by most academic departments at Weber. It will be located in a fully renovated space, formerly the senior lounge, on Weber’s second floor. Weber’s Fab Lab will be led by experts in the field of TED (technology, engineering and design) including Weber Programming & Curriculum Coordinator of TED Chris Chapman.
The Daniel Zalik Academy was made possible by a generous grant from the Zalik Foundation Fund, a charity founded by Helen and David Zalik. The fund is named for David’s late brother, Daniel.
Weber’s Fab Lab will be connected to a network of other Fab Labs around the world. Weber students will have the opportunity to communicate and collaborate with students, teachers and industry professionals at the Mitchell and Guerin Academies, as well as Fab Labs in Israel and around the globe.
Many courses in the TED field will be centered around design, prototyping, computer science and 3D modeling. View all of the classes in The Daniel Zalik Academy pamphlet. Students will begin in “Basecamp Studio” which will teach basic knowledge in TED. There are paths to follow in order to gain expertise in certain areas, which all lead up to “Apex Studio.” Apex Studio is described as “…the pinnacle of TED education at Weber” according to Mr. Chapman.
The Weber Fab Lab will feature state of the art tools and machines including twelve 3D printers, a CNC router, a plasma cutter and more. Here’s a list of the included machines:
Trotec Speedy 400 Flexx
Shopbot 4×8 CNC Alpha
Prusa i3 Mk3
Roland VersaCAMM 540
Roland MDX-50 Milling Machine
Lincoln Electric Tomahawk 1000
Millermatic 212 Auto-Set MIG
