Rashida Tlaib is a Democratic congressional representative for Michigan. Tlaib is an American politician as well as a lawyer. While speaking on a podcast for Yahoo News, “Skullduggery,” she was asked about her views on a one-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She answered by speaking about the Holocaust, and she said “there’s kind of a calming feeling I always tell folks when I think of the Holocaust, and the tragedy of the Holocaust, and the fact that it was my ancestors, Palestinians, who lost their land and some lost their lives, their livelihood, their human dignity, their existence in many ways, have been wiped out, and some people’s passports.” She then added, “I mean, just all of it was in the name of trying to create a safe haven for Jews, post-the Holocaust, post-the tragedy and the horrific persecution of Jews across the world at that time, and I love the fact that it was my ancestors that provided that, right, in many ways.”
Tlaib wrote that her ancestors provided a safe haven for the Jews, but Palestinian leader Grand Mufti Haj Amin el Amin el Husseini was an ally of Adolf Hitler and met with the Nazi dictator in 1941. Jews began descending to Palestine decades before the end of the Holocaust and were still not welcomed. Tlaib has stood beside her comments defending herself and having her friend, Ilhan Omar, defend her as well. Shortly after she said this anti-semitic statement, she received an outbreak of criticism from many Republicans such as President Donald J. Trump, Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations and even some Democrats. President Trump tweeted “Democrat Rep. Tlaib is being slammed for her horrible and highly insensitive statement on the Holocaust. She obviously has tremendous hatred of Israel and the Jewish people. Can you imagine what would happen if I ever said what she said, and says?” Tlaib stood by her comment and instead turned it around, trying to criticize the media for “policing [her] words, twisting & turning them to ignite vile attacks on [her] will not work.”
Somali-American politician and state representative Ilhan Omar came to Tlaib’s defense regarding her insensitive remarks about Jews, just like Tlaib defended Omar’s disdainful comment about 9/11. A few months ago, Omar stated “some people did something” while speaking about 9/11. The events of 9/11 were a horrific tragedy where over 3000 Americans were murdered by 26 radical Muslim terrorists, and this event brought America to its knees. Our lives were changed forever, and Omar’s comments minimized 9/11. Both of Omar and Tlaibs backgrounds, their culture, and their religion should have no bearing on describing these two horrific events in our history.
