Six months ago, my daily morning routine would consist of me waking up at 7:15 sharp in order to leave my house by 7:30 to be on time for school. Even though my attendance has been the best it has ever been, I still had to rush out of the house every single day. Waking up at 7:15 meant that it was too late for me to eat breakfast. Starting my day off this way would contribute to my growing academic and social anxiety as a student. I would drive to school with my stomach growling, and it was constant throughout the day.

In my first class, I would always leave to purchase items from the vending machines, which would serve as my “breakfast.” However, the snacks inside the machine are extremely unhealthy and very unfilling. I needed something stronger to get me through the day. I have tried just having coffee, but that didn’t seem to work.

I was unaware of how easily I could change my life for the better. All it took was waking up 10 minutes earlier to fill my bowl of cereal. After I changed my lifestyle, I began to notice drastic differences in the way I felt. In school, normally I was inattentive, with my head down at my desk, counting down the minutes until class was over. With food in my stomach, I am able to focus on class instead of dreaming about fluffy eggs with crunchy toast.

There is a visible difference in my physique as well. I look more filled out than I had ever been, which has always been a goal of mine considering I have never been the largest in a group. As a baseball player, this is crucial to the field. I have more power in my swing and I can move around more efficiently. Also, I am influencing my teammates by being energetic during practice rather than the normal zombie I had always been. This allowed me to enjoy the game and I can safely say that I have fallen in love with it. Now, I have a personal drive for doing anything I can to benefit myself.

There are many advantages for eating in the morning. The human body goes into an overnight fasting mode, and breakfast disturbs that by replenishing the body with glucose in order to have energy throughout the day. For some, they don’t want to eat breakfast because they fear that they will gain weight, but in fact, breakfast decreases BMI. For students, breakfast is key because it has been proven to improve memory and attention.

Jessica Lagala, Associate Athletic Director and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator at The Weber School, is a proponent for eating breakfast. She expressed that she eats breakfast “as often as [she] can.” To start her day, she consumes an “overnight oatmeal with flax seed, chia seeds, cinnamon, banana, and peanut butter.” In this meal she obtains “protein, carbohydrates and fats.” Though she values her breakfast, she states that “all meals are just as important.”

This healthy lifestyle has motivated me to improve my life in other ways as well. I try my best to go to sleep at a reasonable hour and maintain a healthy diet throughout the day. I now have enough self control to refrain from sweets and opt for nutritious foods that fill up my plate.

In conclusion, breakfast is essential for kicking off a successful day. This small change can provide drastic differences in how you function mentally and physically. To those who have devalued the significance of breakfast, I am certain that it is worth your time.
