And they’re off! The runoff campaign for Sixth District congressperson is in full swing. Jon Ossoff, Democratic candidate and overall underdog, came two percentage points shy of winning the congressional special election, receiving 48.6 percent of the vote, while Karen Handel, Republican candidate and purported shoo-in, received only 19.5 percent of the vote. This may seem strange, given their statuses, and in reality, it is quite a feat for Ossoff to have gotten this far.

The Republican candidates are experienced and have the allegiance of the state on their side. They are all so qualified, that they have drummed up publicity from multiple angles and spread the Republican party even thinner than it already was. The dissonant allegiances within their party have caused the Republicans to disagree over who in their party they should vote for. The Democrats, on the other hand, have put all their eggs in one proverbial basket. Said-basket’s name is Jon Ossoff, and he is the talk of the Democratic town. Democrats from all over the district, including those with write-in vote eligibility, cast their votes for their beloved Ossoff, using slogans such as “Vote your Ossof” in order to appeal to a more contemporary votership. As the runoff looms nearer, Handel relies on her allegiance to President Donald Trump, and her party’s lack of choices, to pull ahead and win the race. Ossoff continues to campaign as never before with his goal to “flip the Sixth” District.

The dissonant allegiances within their party have caused the Republicans to disagree over who in their party they should vote for.

The Sixth District of Georgia has been Republican for as long as anyone can remember. According to “Invisible Georgia’s Sixth District,” “Thanks to gerrymandering (a common manipulation of districts based on party, executed by both parties in different territories) and geographical dispersion of voters by party, the GOP has a big national advantage in House elections.” “Flipping the Sixth” is the notion that electing a Democratic congressperson will spur a set of elections that will turn the tides on the long-time Republican districts. SwingLeft, a political website designed to relay statistics regarding flipping the House of Representatives, estimates there are only 52 “swing districts,” which they define as having a margin of 15% or less in the last election: “SwingLeft” postulates, that “we (the Democrats) need to flip or hold 41 of those to turn over the House.” Similarly, the Republican candidates are campaigning to not “Let the Dems steal GA-6.”

This race is closer than it’s ever been in this district, so whether you were watching the election on the Republican side, or on the Democratic side, remember our state received national media coverage. So, go get registered, and exemplify your pride for our country’s democracy and the state of Georgia.
